Prices run from Rs 6.99 lakh for the Tiago EV to Rs 17.49 lakh for the top Nexon EV, or from just Rs 4.69 lakh if you use Tata's new Battery-as-a-Service plan. The real question is not which is best, but which matches your longest regular drive.

There is some overlap: a loaded Tiago EV Creative+ 24 at Rs 9.99 lakh sits right against the entry TataPunch EV Smart 30 at Rs 9.69 lakh, and a top Punch EV Empowered Plus S 40 at Rs 12.59 lakh nearly touches the base Nexon EV Creative Plus MR at Rs 12.49 lakh. Those are the two real decision points.

The Punch EV is the only one of the three with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and six airbags across every single variant, top to bottom.

On BaaS: both the Tiago EV and Punch EV now offer Battery-as-a-Service, letting you buy the car without the battery and pay a per-km rental instead (roughly ₹2.60/km before GST on both). The Nexon EV doesn't offer this option. If your monthly mileage is high enough to make BaaS pay off (roughly 1,500 km/month or more), it's worth pricing against a standard purchase before you default to the higher trim.

The honest ranking by usable, real-world range is the Punch EV 40 kWh and Nexon EV 45 kWh at the top (both comfortably above 300 km), then the Tiago EV 24 kWh and Nexon EV 30 kWh in the low-200s, then the Tiago EV 19.2 kWh for pure city duty. Note that the Nexon EV 45 kWh, despite the biggest claimed number in the family, retains a lower percentage of it in real-world driving than the smaller packs, likely due to its heavier body and higher performance state of tune.

For a daily city commute under 100 km, even the Tiago EV's 19.2 kWh pack has real-world buffer to spare. For intercity runs, only the Nexon EV's 45 kWh or the Punch EV's 40 kWh packs give you genuine margin, and even then, budget on the real-world figure, not the claimed one.

Charging: where the cheap cars give ground

The Tiago EV fast-charges at up to 30 kW on the 24 kWh pack, taking 10% to 80% in about 35 minutes. The Punch EV uses a 65 kW DC charger, cutting a 20% to 80% top-up to about 26 minutes. The Nexon EV's 45 kWh pack takes 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes on a 60 kW charger, while the 30 kWh MR variants need roughly 56 minutes on a 50 kW unit.

Home charging follows battery size. The Tiago EV's smaller packs charge fastest at home, with a 7.2 kW wallbox taking the 19.2 kWh pack from 10% to 100% in about 2.6 hours and the 24 kWh pack in about 3.6 hours. The Punch EV's 30 kWh pack needs roughly 11.9 hours on a 15A socket and the 40 kWh pack about 14.8 hours. The Nexon EV's packs take roughly 4.3 hours (MR) to 6 hours (45 kWh) on a 7.2 kW wallbox, so a proper home wallbox matters more the larger you go.

Performance: the gap is wider than the price gap

The Tiago EV makes 61 bhp with 110 Nm on the 19.2 kWh pack and 74 bhp with 114 Nm on the 24 kWh pack. It's a city car first; nobody buys it for pace. On the Nexon EV's warranty specifically, this needs correcting against most brochure summaries: it is not a flat 8-year/1,60,000 km warranty across all variants. Only the 45 kWh Nexon EV carries Tata's lifetime, unlimited-km HV battery warranty (15 years for the first owner, reducing to 8 years/1,60,000 km on resale). The 30 kWh MR Nexon EV does not get this cover and sits on the standard 8-year/1,60,000 km terms, the same tier as the Punch EV's 30 kWh pack and the Tiago EV's 19.2 kWh pack.

Put together, the “lifetime warranty” club across the whole Tata EV family is really just three packs: Tiago EV 24 kWh, Punch EV 40 kWh, and Nexon EV 45 kWh. Every smaller pack, regardless of which car it's in, gets the finite 8-year cover.

Space follows the price ladder. The Tiago EV is a 3,825 mm hatchback with a 240-litre boot and a 2,400 mm wheelbase. The Punch EV is a 3,880 mm compact SUV with a 366-litre boot and 195 mm of ground clearance. The Nexon EV costs noticeably more per km to run than either smaller car, roughly 25 to 30% more, because its heavier body and quicker motor draw more energy per kilometre even though the electricity assumption is identical.
