The two battery packs change the car, not just the price

Every Punch EV is sold with either a 30 kWh or a 40 kWh LFP battery. The 30 kWh pack is ARAI-rated at 365 km and makes 88 bhp with 154 Nm of torque; the 40 kWh pack is ARAI-rated at 468 km and makes 129 bhp with the same 154 Nm. That jump in power is why the 0-100 km/h time falls from 13.5 seconds to 9 seconds between the two.

Both packs fast-charge the same way: a 65 kW DC charger takes the battery from 20% to 80% in about 26 minutes, and Tata claims a 15-minute top-up adds up to 135 km of range on the 40 kWh car. Home charging differs, though. A full charge on a 15A household socket runs roughly 11.9 hours on the 30 kWh pack and 14.8 hours on the 40 kWh pack. If you only ever charge overnight at home, either works; if you rely on DC top-ups, the charging time is identical regardless of pack size.

Battery warranty is where the two packs genuinely diverge, and it's worth getting right. The 40 kWh pack carries a lifetime, unlimited-km warranty for the first private owner; if you sell the car, that resets to 8 years or 1,60,000 km for the next owner. The 30 kWh pack gets its own 8-year/1,60,000 km battery warranty from day one, which is solid but finite. If you plan to keep the car well past eight years or want maximum resale confidence, that gap is worth paying for.

ARAI figures are measured under controlled test conditions. Tata itself now publishes a separate, more honest number for real-world driving under the newer C75 test cycle, and it's worth quoting directly because most coverage doesn't:

●      30 kWh pack: 365 km ARAI-claimed, but roughly 260 to 275 km in real-world city driving, by Tata's own estimate.

●      40 kWh pack: 468 km ARAI-claimed, but roughly 335 to 355 km in real-world use (Tata quotes ~355 km under the C75 cycle).

That's about 71 to 76% of the claimed figure making it to the road, which is actually better real-world retention than many EVs manage, helped by the Punch's light weight and small frontal area. Still, if you're planning your commute or a weekend trip around the ARAI number rather than the real-world one, budget for roughly a quarter less range once AC, traffic and Indian road conditions are factored in.

The BaaS option: should you skip owning the battery?

New for the 2026 facelift, Tata is offering Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) on the Punch EV, and it's currently restricted to the base Smart 30 variant only (not even the Smart Plus 30, which shares the same battery). Under this plan:

●      Upfront price drops to Rs 6.49 lakh (chassis only)

●      The battery is financed separately at roughly ₹2.60 per km before GST, closer to ₹3.2 per km after

●      There's a minimum monthly rental of around Rs 5,000, whether you drive the car or not

At roughly 1,500 to 1,800 km a month, the battery EMI works out close to what Tata itself quotes (~₹4,688/month at 1,800 km). Smart 30 and Smart Plus 30: the value entry

The Smart 30 starts at Rs 9.69 lakh. It gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring and hill-hold. That's a strong safety floor for a sub-10-lakh electric car. The infotainment is basic here, and the front-only power windows are the giveaway that this is the stripped car. It's also the only variant available under the BaaS plan, at Rs 6.49 lakh chassis-only.

The Smart Plus 30, at Rs 10.29 lakh, adds the first genuinely useful kit: an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, front and rear power windows and connected-car features. It costs Rs 60,000 more and keeps the same 365 km ARAI pack and 88 bhp motor. For most city buyers this is the trim to measure everything else against.

Both 30 kWh cars are honest about their limits. The 13.5-second 0-100 km/h time is fine for stop-go traffic, but the motor runs out of breath on the expressway. Highway buyers should not start here.

Smart Plus 40: the range upgrade

At Rs 10.89 lakh, the Smart Plus 40 is the cheapest way into the 468 km ARAI pack. You get the same trim features as the Smart Plus 30, but the bigger battery, the 129 bhp motor, and that lifetime battery warranty. The Rs 60,000 jump over the Smart Plus 30 is arguably the single best value step in the range, because it upgrades the two things you cannot add later: range and power.

There's a catch worth naming. The Smart Plus 40 rides on the same 15-inch wheels and 185/70 R15 tyres as the base cars, and it doesn't get the cruise control or bigger screens of the Adventure and Empowered trims. You're paying for the battery, not the cabin.

Adventure 40: the mid-spec pick

The Adventure 40 sits at Rs 11.59 lakh. On top of the Smart Plus features it adds cruise control and carries over the 8-inch touchscreen. It's the trim most testers point to as the balanced buy: 468 km of claimed range, the faster motor, and the first real convenience features.

It still uses the 8-inch screen. If you want the larger display, you step up to the Empowered cars.

Empowered 40 and Empowered Plus S 40: the top models

The Empowered 40, at Rs 12.29 lakh, brings a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, a reverse camera and 16-inch wheels with 195/60 R16 tyres. The Empowered Plus S 40 tops the range at Rs 12.59 lakh and adds a sunroof and ventilated front seats on top of that, plus a 360-degree camera and other locked-away convenience features that Tata reserves for the top trims.

These two are the only variants with the larger screen and the 16-inch wheels. If cabin tech and comfort matter more to you than saving Rs 1.5 lakh, the Empowered 40 is the better buy than the Adventure 40, because the Rs 70,000 gap buys the bigger display and the digital cluster. The Empowered Plus S 40's sunroof and ventilated seats are nice-to-haves, not necessities, in a compact SUV that already costs close to Rs 13 lakh ex-showroom.

40 kWh pack, real-world efficiency (~345 km average from a 40 kWh charge):
