BYD Seal

The BYD Seal is the premium all-electric sedan from the world's largest EV maker, launched in India on 5 March 2024 and sold in three variants — Dynamic at Rs 41.5 lakh, Premium at Rs 46.2 lakh and Performance at Rs 53.65 lakh (ex-showroom). It rides on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with Cell-to-Body construction, a design that folds the Blade Battery pack into the chassis, and it cuts through air with a drag coefficient of just 0.219 Cd.

Range and charging

The Seal is offered with a 61.44 kWh pack in the Dynamic variant and an 82.56 kWh pack in the Premium and Performance variants. Claimed range runs from 510 km on the Dynamic to 650 km on the Premium RWD and 580 km on the Performance AWD. On a 150 kW DC fast charger the larger pack fills from 10 to 80 per cent in about 37 minutes, while a 7 kW home AC charger tops it up overnight in roughly 10 to 12 hours. The Blade Battery carries an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty.

Performance and driving

Performance differs sharply across the lineup. The rear-wheel-drive Dynamic makes 201 bhp and 310 Nm with a 7.5-second 0-100 km/h time. The Premium RWD steps up to 308 bhp and 360 Nm for 5.9 seconds, while the flagship Performance AWD packs 523 bhp and 670 Nm for a 3.8-second sprint and a 250 km/h top speed. Premium and Performance variants add Frequency Selective Dampers and DiSus-C intelligent damping respectively for a calmer ride.

Practicality and features

At 4,800 mm long on a 2,920 mm wheelbase, the Seal is a genuine five-seater with 400 litres of boot and a 50-litre front trunk. A 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 360-degree camera, powered tailgate and nine airbags come standard. It holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating with Level 2 ADAS, and five exterior colours are offered, with Shark Grey reserved for the Performance variant.

Who should buy it

If you want a fast, well-equipped electric sedan, the Seal is among the most compelling options against the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Tesla Model 3, Volvo EX30 and BMW i4, with claimed range of up to 650 km and a 523 bhp Performance variant. Its 145 mm ground clearance and low stance suit smooth city roads and highways better than rough terrain, and buyers should factor in BYD's still-expanding service network as well as the January 2026 voluntary recall, which is being resolved with a free battery-pack OBD scan.
