Piaggio Ape Wave

The Piaggio Ape Wave is a fully electric high-speed passenger carrier (L5M) from Piaggio Vehicles, priced from Rs 2.55 lakh (ex-showroom). Built on a chassis-with-cabin layout with a fully built day cabin, this three-wheeler seats a driver and three passengers (D+3) within a 695 kg gross vehicle weight and a 395 kg kerb weight, leaving around 300 kg for passengers and luggage. It targets city auto owners and small operators moving people on short, predictable routes.

Range and charging

A 5.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack on a 51.2 V architecture delivers a claimed range of 140 km on a full charge. A full charge takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, which fits an overnight top-up between working days. The single 1920/Electric variant pairs an automatic transmission with a 1-forward/1-reverse gearbox, so there is no manual shift for the driver to manage.

Performance and payload

A 4.3 kW electric motor produces 27 Nm of torque, taking the Ape Wave to a top speed of 45 km/h with 19.6 per cent gradeability and a 225 mm ground clearance for city roads. Drum brakes (hydraulically actuated, internal expanding and self adjusting), hill hold and leading arm front suspension with a constant-rate coil spring round out the package. The 695 kg gross weight against a 395 kg kerb weight leaves roughly 300 kg of effective load for passengers and luggage.

The Ape Wave suits city auto operators and small fleet owners whose daily pattern is short passenger hops with charging available between trips. At a from price of Rs 2.55 lakh it undercuts petrol three-wheelers on running cost, but buyers should expect a basic cabin: no AC, handle bar steering and no seat belts as standard. Telematics come fitted as standard, which helps a small fleet owner track vehicles, but service reach outside major metros still depends on the dealer network.
