The MG Comet EV is a two-door, four-seat electric city car that brings distinctive styling and surprising practicality to the budget EV segment. Priced between ₹7.8 lakh and ₹10.07 lakh (ex-showroom), it is one of the most affordable electric cars in India. A 42 bhp rear-mounted motor drives the rear wheels, fed by a 17.3 kWh battery that delivers a claimed range of 230 km and a top speed of 85 km/h. It is built for city life — small footprint, easy parking and very low running costs.
Range and charging
Range: The Comet EV is rated at 230 km on a full charge of its 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. Real-world range will be lower than the claim — expect a practical daily range in the hundreds of kilometres short of 230 depending on traffic and air-conditioning use — but for city driving, most owners find a full charge covers several days of commuting.
Charging: The Comet EV charges via a Type-2 AC connector only — there is no CCS2 DC fast charging. Standard variants take about 420 minutes (7 hours) on a 3.3 kW charger, while the FC variants cut this to about 210 minutes (3.5 hours) using a 7.4 kW charger. Overnight home charging is the intended routine.
Performance and driving
The rear-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor makes 42 bhp and 110 Nm of torque, delivering a 19.9-second 0-100 km/h time and an 85 km/h top speed. This is not a performance car — the Comet is about efficient, easy urban motoring, with a tight turning radius of 4200 mm that makes parking and U-turns in cramped streets genuinely easy. Multi-link rear suspension and a 165 mm ground clearance keep the ride settled.
Practicality and features
Despite its compact footprint, the Comet EV seats four with 350 litres of boot space. Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen (on Excite and above), Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, reverse camera and connected-car features via MG iSMART. Six paint schemes are offered, from Candy White to Apple Green with Starry Black. The battery carries an 8-year or 1,20,000 km warranty.
Who should buy it
The MG Comet EV is for city dwellers who want the lowest possible entry into electric car ownership without compromising on style or practicality. It suits singles, couples and small families who primarily drive in town, park in tight spots and want running costs far below a petrol car. If you regularly drive long highway distances, a larger, faster EV with DC fast charging would serve you better — but for urban commuting, the Comet is a compelling package.
